2013 International Law and Protection

International Law and the Protection of International Investments

Investor rights are spreading beyond bilateral investment treaties into trade agreements (like NAFTA and the Korea-US free trade agreement) and into current negotiations for such major regional agreements as the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.  Yet, this complex network of treaties is anything but “user friendly” for international investors.

Perry Bechky, Senior Attorney, Dorsey & Whitney, will provide an introduction to the international law of investment protection.  He will discuss the history of investment treaties and investment arbitration, the major rules typically found in investment treaties, alternatives to investment treaties, current developments and controversies, the nuts and bolts of navigating this system, and special issues facing small- and medium-sized companies with international claims.
